Don't get to hard on the Irish here - an Irish performer has won it 7 times:

It was a popular event around 1970 when Dana won it for Ireland. Very controversial, because the runner up from the UK was Mary Hopkin, by then a big star.

Wikipedia confirms my recollection:

Note also an unknown called Julio Iglesias was in the field!

I'm not being hard on the Irish at all Peter.

Their choice this year may be most apt for this forum for contemporary European music.

You have been busy checking out the history of the Eurovision contest.

It is interesting that you bought forward the 1970 contest in your comment, thats a mere 38 years ago, and perhaps then, given what you have revealed, the idea had some merit.

Unbelievable rubbish from Peter again. What a crackpot.

Can we please have d4j sent to the naughty room for a month; all he ever seems to do is hurl insult and abuse (apart from when he is threatening to assault Stan or myself).

His presence detracts from what can be other wise pleasant interchanges with people I rarely agree with, but generally respect.

Given the population of Ireland, it is remarkable that they have won this thing more than anyone else. As you point out, the Irish, like the Scottish, have produced more than their share of popular entertainers.

Lulu of Scotland shared 1st place with 4 others in 1969.

The contest is pretty harmless I think.

I don't get it, this is a flippant post on modern trash Euro culture. Or maybe its not trash culture maybe it is modern European culture, I surely hope not.

Peter is commenting on topic and bringing interesting little tit bits to light in the process.

No call for any agro

fugly -you are one very sick unit and if anybody doesn't believe how vile this creature go and read what he is saying about this site on the smile city forum message boards.

He is one demonic piece of evil crap. Why do you tolerate the backstabbing creep is beyond me !?

Lulu of Scotland shared 1st place with 3 others in 1969, sorry.

Andrei you can call this "modern trash Euro culture" - by that do you mean entertainment?

Every country has its share. I believe Kiri te Kanawa's comments about Hayley Westenra are a case in point - giggling girlie with a bland voice. Every song just the same and every verse just the same.

I thought Andrei's post was humourous and definitely not in any way a slight on the Irish. As he said "No call for any agro"...yet out of the blue D4J goes on some unprovoked outrage. D4J - it is indeed sad that you hurl abuse and incite hatred in blogoshpere for kicks. While you are not the only one, you always seem to be at the centre of all petty disputes littered with childish name-calling. From the chip on your shoulder, it appears you have already received your justice.

Eurovision Song Contest is a fun competition with a history of serious rivalry.

I think it should continue.
