News release from Ian Wishart on 'H Fee'

The author of a bestselling book on 1980s corporate corruption says suggestions that John Key was even remotely a figure in the 'H Fee' scandal back then are laughable.

Ian Wishart, who wrote The Paradise Conspiracy about convoluted tax haven deals, says he stumbled across key information about the 'H Fee' while researching the Winebox deals.

"The H-Fee deal was a closely guarded secret, similar to most of the Winebox transactions, and known only to a handful of people in its entirety," Wishart said tonight.

"The Winebox contained a number of similar deals so secretive that companies had two autonomous teams working on different sides of a deal, so that no one on either team - within the same company - could join all the dots and realise what was going on. The only people who knew were the top management.

"The idea that ordinary company hacks and junior employees had any kind of overview, even if they played bit parts in the transactions, is ridiculous.

"As a direct result of Winebox inquiries, I stumbled across information regarding a particular businessman who DID play a key role in the H-Fee and who had not previously been identified by the Serious Fraud Office or Australian crime authority investigators.

"During discussions with the Australian federal agencies about some aspects of the Winebox deals, I made them aware of the missing link in their H-Fee investigation. Within hours they had assembled a specific team to assess that evidence, and within days they made contact with the person concerned and finally got the break in the H-Fee investigation they needed.

"Needless to say, the witness was not John Key, and was in fact much higher up the food chain."

Wishart said Labour should leave investigative journalism to those who know how to do it, and the Prime Minister should concentrate instead on figuring out how to rescue her government from electoral annihilation next week.

I love the gullibility of Poneke

Truly hopeless, is dear old Poneke.

He accepts at face value Clark's statement that Yang Liu has donated $5,000 to Labour. Did Clark say that was ALL he donated?

No.

The $5,000 was made prior to the 2005 election, and was not part of the fundraising meets of the current election cycle that Mike Williams confirmed "aggregate" donations into a kitty, rather than keeping track of individual donors and amounts.

Yet, from Clark's attempt to quarantine speculation about donations to the one that was given "on the record" rather than into the kitty, both The Standard and Poneke happily fall into the trap like heffalumps looking for Helen's hunny.

Every claim made by our DIA sources in that story was correct. What they said was if the SFO walks in, they'll find many more examples of Ministerial prerogative against advice than just Mr Liu.

THAT's why this is a big story. There are more bones awaiting excavation.

None of this had anything to do with National, because it isn't about donations to parties per se. It's about a party, now proven to have taken money, going against independent advice and awarding citizenship to a man who had boasted to DIA about paying money to Labour.

When was the last time you broke ANY story, Poneke, let alone a major one? Long time, no byline.
