You may find this comment from John Key, Sept 2, 2007, interesting:
"At the moment there are certain rules around Kyoto which just don’t seem to be in the best interests of the New Zealand economy. Because I think when you look at climate change you have to put it in perspective. Yes it’s a global issue, yes NZ could be damaged from a trading perspective if we don’t take it seriously, but equally we want to not only balance our environmental responsibilities but also our economic opportunities, and to simply kneecap our economy and then to leave NZ companies in a much worse position than say other countries, who are also located on the same planet, doesn’t really seem to make sense."

And while you are still reeling from Nick Smith's capture of Key, have a think about attending one of these:
Ramping up the Pressure
John Boscawen has held 19 Public Meetings on the ETS so far, and now more and more New Zealanders are putting pressure on the government to defer it before it is too late.
In response to this, Nick Smith and the National M.P.’s are fighting a rear guard action and publishing incorrect and misleading statements in an effort to neutralise the economic logic John Boscawen is presenting at these meetings and through the media. But this is a last-ditch attempt to justify the unreasonable excesses of an ETS regime.

This is an interesting interview, thanks for posting.
If I get time, I'll try to post a text transcript.
It does seem that Key was preferring a more flexible approach rather than the rigid carbon trading model, in this interview.
We would be better off taxing fuel and reinvesting that back into energy-efficiency schemes (e.g house insulation) rather than a cumbersome carbon trading scheme that seems to be set up to benefit the corporates and penalise the poor old consumer.
It does seem a bit weird that so called "right-wingers" are actually shouting out for the common man while the state sets up to cream them.

At least Rodney Hide is standing up for National voters.

Interesting to see John Boscowan has had the grace to post a comment on HT, and gets treated to the usual truffle hospitality.

That's because John Boscawen is a gentleman. Those guys are mongrels.

I was at University Engineering library the day Al Gore was having his lecture at Auckland University. When I left the library, I saw John Key came out of the lecture theatre where Gore's lecture was held (at the engineering school). I believe that Key was impressed with Al Gore's lecture, which perhaps made him a convert into an AGW believer, despite him saying publicly at the time that he didn't believe AGW. I think that Mr. Key was mesmerized by Al Gore's cunning presentation.

"That's because John Boscawen is a gentleman. Those guys are mongrels."
Problem with that lot over at HT.
They suffer from 'Headless Chicken Syndrome'.
Time they found their heads. Although I suspect if and when they do find them. They'll put them on back to front anyway!

Delingpole has a nice take on these attitudes:
"The Warmists really are a malign and spleen-filled bunch. As of course you would be if the science was against you, the public were growing increasingly sceptical, and all you really had left to defend your cause was bullying and bluster."

Dont get your hopes up too much. John Key last week said on readio live that he believes in "Climate Change" which isnt what it sounds. The IPCC in its 1982 Framework Convention difines it as "A change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity ......". So he does believe our activities significantly affect the climate. Also he insists 29 other countries have signed up for ETS progammes but neglects to add that 27 of them are the EU block which were signed up by the EU administration without consultation with the countries involved. Sounds incredible but its true.

Oh dear, I a really starting to think our deal old PM is out of touch with reality.
Does he not realise the depth of the Euro crisis?
If this escalates, we could really be heading for Great Depression MkII. Climate change really will be the last thing on anyone's mind.

Perhaps the PM should visit Dunedin Town.
Otago university is spending 1000 million dollars of tax payers money this year on alone 'building projects'.
Yup - that's right - 3 million per day.
The university is also rumoured to be no longer taking domestic students, but only full fee paying international students from now on. It appears that too many New Zealander taxpayers wish to access the university ... and it doesn't make that much money for the uni any more.
And you thought kiwis could get the education they wanted in user pays? Think again.

The higher education is also stated to be no more getting every day learners, but only complete fee shelling out worldwide learners from now on. This indicates that too many New Zealander individuals wish to accessibility the higher education ... and it doesn't make that much cash for the uni any more.
