Danyl Mclauchlan

I predict that your clumsy sarcasm will sound a little hollow in twenty years time when your Doctor offers to inject similar organisms into your bloodstream to rebuild your islet cells and clear plaque from your arteries.

All those things are already achievable or are reversable without genetic engineering, but through natural processes!

Ian merely points out that this "artificial life" is constructed from a pre-existing living cell and Danyl scoffs believing this development holds promise the "elixir of youth".

Clearly andrei past NCEA english real gud - when you use quotation marks in reference to someone's views its supposed to mean you are directly quoting something they said, not giving your own moronic interpretation.

Has Venter created life? Depends on your definition of life, but him and his team have done something incredibly difficult that nobody has ever done before. Creating your own custom genomes and placing them inside a cell crosses a very significant threshold - that's why its front page news all over the world. Presumably when silicon semiconductors were invented andrei and Ian would have been slapping their knees and laughing about how much smaller and faster slide rules and abacus's are.

Its increasingly obvious that biotech such as protein synthesis and custom genomics is going to have a much larger impact on our lives than the IT revolution of the last fifty years. You ain't seen nuthin' yet.

Ian

Danyl...whilst I can appreciate the technical skills involved...and it is a big leap forward I concede...it is not creating "artificial life".

When Venter creates a non DNA or RNA based lifeform, then I'll take my hat off to the significance. What I am attacking here is not what he HAS acheived - I am attacking his hype that he has acheived more than this...

Venter is the one trumpeting from the rooftops about his creation of life...he has done no such thing....
