« The Divinity Code | Main | revised Electoral Bill "even worse" than the original »

Rick

haha

Hands on heads on the mat too if they've been naughty. No playlunch either.

dave

There has been no signiricant rise in child abuse? That means there must have been a rise, albeit not significant, if there was a 0.001% fall you would bet they would say there was a fall in child abuse and link it to the smacking bill.

peter

I think Cindy Kiro deserves support for her accurate observations.

It is exactly the "bigger political agenda" that Ian exploits with "Investigate" and books like "Eve's Bite". Just like a lawyer with a very wide brief.

With Civil Union legislation, Christian fundamentalists predicted mayhem and did not get it. Likewise with the child abuse legislation changes.

The child abuse legislation change exists as a clear warning to all and sundry. Get violent with kids and there will be no excuses. People are generally heeding the warning. Good on Labour and National for helping Sue Bradford to get this through.

By the way, the wider political agenda referred to by Cindy Kiro is dominated by a wish to destabilise and remove the Labour led government. Problem is that they can not propose a viable alternative that would make any real difference. Therefore the fundamentist attitude is negative and demoralising when it need not be.

Rick

Cindy Kiro is a liar. During the days before S59 amendments were carried she taught people in her presentations that all christians smack their children as of divine right. If that isn't agenda, I don't know what is.

Good to see peter is espousing Labour as The Natural Party of government for NZ. God almighty, they're completely insane. Forget democracy, Labour are it, as of divine right. LOL

You don't get it do you peter? There doesn't have to be a good alternative while getting rid of a corrupt and criminal government in a democracy. LOL

Labour are toast!

Mike

You have no understanding of either Christianity or of the legislative process Peter, and I despair for NZ's future reading posts like yours. As for Cindy Caro, she is merely a stalking horse used by the Labour Party to draw fire away from them. Same goes for Steve Fitzgerald of the traffic police and all those wet blanket fireman who come out every 5th November to complain about having to do the work they're actually paid to do i.e. put out fires. These "spokespeople" are civil servants and should not be a first line of defense for politicians or be trying to bend policy to more comfortably suit themselves at the expense of those who pay their wages.

With views like yours no wonder this country is on the slippery slope to anarchy. And watch Oz start going the same way when Rudd's elected next week.

peter

Mike

I am sure we all look forward to the Australian election result with great anticipation.

I am surprised at the conspiracy theory you attempt here. John Key has also said that a ban on private fireworks is almost certain to happen. Sorry!

I have a VERY GOOD understanding of Christianity thank you, as I look back on those wasted Sunday mornings of my childhood. I keep saying that Jesus was an interesting moral philosopher, and the bits and pieces of his life recorded in the Bible are useful. Professor Lloyd Geering said as much on National Radio at 5pm last night. If Liberal Protestantism and Modernist Catholicism had really taken off, the mainstream churches would still have their congregations.

peter

Fundamentalism has been on its agenda for over a century:

Mike

I'm grateful for your further enlightenment but I'd like to suggest that you've apparently no idea of how the media works either Peter.

Apart from proud stand-alone's like Ian, the rest have an insidious agenda of one sort or another the predominant theme being one of a God-forsaken liberalism and which you appear to absorbed starting from with your mothers milk. Shake off that crap, open your eyes and start thinking for yourself! You can do it!

As for John Key - (sorry Ian!) he's as bad as the rest! And Geering? Hah! Hah! Hah! Hah!!

Apologies to all - and especially Peter. Didn't mean to double-whammy you!

Andy

I'll just deconstruct this well-prepared propaganda a bit...

Children's Commissioner Cindy Kiro said there had been a campaign run by Christian fundamentalist groups...

**Purely conjecture and exaggeration. She uses these emotive terms frequently. And, "the campaign" was not only run by Christians as she seems to be suggesting**

"Their [aim] is to run a bigger political agenda...

**Says who? You're supposed to be the children's commissioner - a stupid and unnecessary role created by the current government to further the surveillance of every single family in New Zealand**

Since the change "the sky hasn't fallen in, parents haven't been charged in overwhelming numbers and children haven't been ripped from their families because they received a smack on the hand".

**Yeah, and we all know why that is the case, because the Government is carefully handling all the cases, hushing them up, or in other instances letting parents off - when according to the new law, they should have been charged. They have to play it carefully to avoid public outcry, and this is exactly what they are doing.**

peter

Andy

This is a really dumb post.

For your information, Parliament MAKES law, the police IMPLEMENT law?

The government would not even hear about specific cases under this legislation.

Take your blinkers off man.

peasant

Peter and Kiro are kindred spirits, mad ideological trolls, who hate males, hate families, hate Christians, and worship the all powerful Labour Gummint. Control freaks and erstwhile demagogues, whose humanity is suppressed in their insane lust for power.

peter

Oh is that right peasant. So extreme right wing Christian fundamentalists have no ideology. Look up the word in the dictionary and then tell me it ain't so.

Like most successful politicians in NZ, I am a pragmatist actually. I'm adaptable.

AcidComments

"Control freaks and erstwhile demagogues, whose humanity is suppressed in their insane lust for power."

If the Labour Party implemented slave labour camps (Gulags) into law would the same individuals still make excuses for them?

peasant

I think the thought experiment above, of replacing the hate-phrase "Christian fundamentalists" with "Jews" was quite revealing.

peter

If we look at Nazi Germany, I am unaware of any evidence that Jewish people were trying to hawk their views onto the general population. Jewish soldiers had fought alongside German soldiers in WWI. In fact I would liken Jews in Germany at that time, with Jews in NZ now. They make no trouble for society.

We have seen however that extreme right wing Christian fundamentalists have agendas for the whole of society, and reject those things that now bind us as a nation. In the case of the Exclusive Brethrens - prepared to sabotage the electoral process itself.

I think that fundamentalists and Catholics should not be renewing their old prejudices against Jewish people in a thread such as this.

For a start I think there is a very weak argument to blame them for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ - really too many centuries have passed to ensure facts are right. Also note that the people alive at that time have been dead a very long time.

ZenTiger

You are not entirely of sound mind Peter. But I'm sure you make sense to yourself.

ZenTiger

Dr Kiro wants to track every child in a database, with interviews by her army of socialist workers to determine if parents match her ideology...and Peter can't see any danger of an abuse of State power?

Was Russia under Stalin taught as 'the good old days' to you Peter?

Psycho Milt

As a Gedankenexperiment, try taking "Leftist" from any of the comments on this blog and replacing it with "Jewish" - now, that will make your hair stand on end.

But on second thoughts, let's not do that, shall we - after all, it's simply rhetorical sleight of hand, not a useful allegorical tool.
